Faculty Member Name: Pat BaldwinSJMC Concentration: Public RelationsBackground: I grew up and graduated from high school in Houston. I’ve worked as a journalist in Houston (Houston Business Journal), Austin (Austin Business Journal), Dallas (Dallas Times Herald, Dallas Morning News and Private Clubs Magazine) and Orlando (Golf for Women Magazine). Over the years, I have taught at seven universities. What brought you to the SJMC at Texas State University? After five years of teaching full-time at The University of North Carolina-Asheville, I returned to Central Texas, partly to see a grandniece and a grandnephew grow up.How long have you been with the SJMC? This is my second year. What courses do you teach? This spring, I am teaching two sections of PR Campaigns and two sections of Intro to PR.Any research/projects you have recently completed? I just attended Texas State’s “Creating and Teaching an Online Course” workshop. What are some of your hobbies or things you enjoy doing outside of work? I enjoy reading, yoga, walking and playing golf. I like watching most sports. What inspires you? Travel. What do you find most fulfilling or rewarding about teaching college students? I love to see a student have an “aha!” moment. Please offer any advice you may have for current SJMC students: Be precise with language. Pay attention to details. Develop an outstanding work ethic.Additional Information: I don’t have a lot of sympathy for student excuses or absences because I earned my doctorate at The University of North Texas in Denton while I was a full-time business writer at The Dallas Morning News. And, for six semesters in the early 2000s, I taught a weekly Magazine Writing class at UT Austin while I worked at ClubCorp in Dallas. I have many tales about IH-35.
