SJMC Scholarships & Gift Accounts

• School of Journalism and Mass Communication (Unrestricted)

  This unrestricted gift account is flexible and can expend funds where most needed by the School. Funds can be used for scholarships, student travel, and any other purpose. It is not limited to a single purpose as are other accounts.

• School of Journalism and Mass Communication Scholarship

  This fund awards small scholarships that assist students with financial needs who seek to do internships but cannot afford the out-of-pocket costs (gasoline, etc.) associated with getting to the worksite. Occasional scholarships can also be awarded as special recognition of achievement.

• Hachar Visiting Hispanic Media Professionals Program

  Funded primarily by gifts from the D.D. Hachar Charitable Trust of Laredo, Texas, this fund brings Hispanic media professionals to campus each fall. It also brings high school students from Webb County, Texas, to campus to interact with the media professionals during Mass Communication Week in October.
   

• Eleanor Preston Endowment

  Funded by Bob and Eleanor Pulver, this fund honors the memory of Eleanor Preston. Its purpose is to fund travel by advertising students to competitions, such as the annual competitions in Houston and the AAF National Student Advertising Competition.

• Jeff Henderson Memorial Scholarship

  These scholarships are available to student employees of The University Star. Prospective applicants must be returning students. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial help to student journalists.
   

• Don Flores Mass Communication Endowment

  This scholarship is funded by Dionicio (Don) Flores, a 1973 journalism graduate and former Star editor. Flores worked in newspaper journalism for decades as a reporter, editor and publisher, most recently in El Paso, Texas. He is also a former regent of the Texas State University System. 

  Requirements: JMC majors with a preference for under-served or under-represented classes. Financial need is a primary consideration. Minimum GPA of 2.5. Community and university service may be considered as final deciding factors.

• Fred Adams Memorial Scholarship

  This scholarship honors Fred Adams, founder of the student newspaper The Star. Founded in 1911, as one of the oldest student publications in Texas. The Star has published steadily through the Great Depression, two world wars and through the Korean, Vietnam and Gulf wars. Mr. Adams later became president and chair of the Adams Extract Company. 

  Requirements: JMC majors with financial needs, who are academically successful, show leadership potential and extracurricular involvement.
   

• Alpha & Omega Fraternity Scholarship

  This scholarship honors members of the Alpha and Omega Fraternity, a secret society started by Lyndon Johnson and a few friends in the fall of 1929. The fraternity, known as “The White Stars” was started to further academic and intellectual pursuits on campus. For 20 years, its 117 members were leaders in journalism, theater, debate and student politics. Roy Willbern created this scholarship endowment when he assigned all the royalties of his book, The White Star Story, to Texas State University. Other members of the fraternity also have made contributions. Willbern received the 1987 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University. He worked as an attorney and established San Jacinto Savings Association. 

  Requirements: Juniors or seniors who have been active in campus media organizations. Full-time enrollment, 3.0 GPA.

• Gloria Campos Endowed Scholarship in Mass Communication

  Funded by Gloria Campos Brown, veteran Dallas television news anchor and a 1976 journalism alumna of Texas State, this scholarship is open to JMC electronic media majors, preferably from under-served or under-represented classes. Campos is the winner of many broadcast awards, and in 2010 was inducted into the National Hispanic Journalism Association Hall of Fame. 

  Requirements: Financial need is a top priority. Minimum GPA of 2.5. Community and university service may be considered as final deciding factors.
   

• Glaves Scholarship

  This scholarship honors the memory of Robert F. Glaves, associate professor at Texas State from 1976-1987. Glaves headed the public relations program at the time of his death. With 25 years of experience as a writer, editor, public relations practitioner and educator, he took a deep interest in his students. Glaves was a journalist in the public relations industry with Beech Aircraft, as well as a writer for business and commercial aviation magazines. 

  Requirements: It is awarded to a high-performing PR student who is also active in the Robert F. Glaves Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America.

• Walter Richter Endowed Scholarship

  Walter Richter was a 1938 graduate and founded the Journalism Department in 1939. He also served as director of the University Alumni Association for six years during the 1940s. He was regional director of the Office of Economic Opportunity appointed by President Lyndon Johnson: a Texas state senator and a trustee of State Colleges and Universities Board. As a student, Richter was editor of The Star and president of the student body. 

  Requirements: JMC majors needing financial aid who have shown academic potential, leadership and extracurricular involvement.

• Don Anders Scholarship

  This scholarship honors Don Anders, who in 2007 retired as Texas State University's photographer after 35 years of stellar service to the University. Family, friends and colleagues contributed to this fund that honors a man who chronicled so much history and many special moments at Texas State. 

  Requirements: Applicants must be full-time students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and/or be a minor in photography. They must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

• Hearst Endowed Scholarship

  The Hearst Foundation, Inc., was founded in 1945 by William Randolph Hearst, philanthropist and founder of the Hearst media empire. The Hearst Corporation is one of the largest diversified communication companies. Its major interests include magazine, newspaper and business publishing, cable networks, television and radio broadcasting, internet business, television production and distribution, newspaper features distribution and real estate. The Hearst Foundation made several sizeable gifts to Texas State to build the value of this endowment. 

  Requirements: Supports continuing and transfer students who are JMC majors with a minimum GPA of 3.25, evidence of leadership and involvement in university-wide extracurricular activities. Freshmen: Top 10 percent of HS class, minimum 3.5 GPA, demonstrated leadership or proven talents.

• Jim and Adele Moss Scholarship in Mass Communication

  A 1961 graduate of the University, Jim Moss was active in student media during his college days. He has a long career in journalism and retired as editor of the San Antonio Express-News. 

  Requirements: JMC print majors, junior standing, minimum GPA of 2.75, full-time enrollment.

• Mike Nickless Scholarship in Advertising and Print

  The Mike Nickless Scholarship in Advertising and Printing was established to honor the memory of Michael M. Nickless who was active in the advertising and marketing community of Austin. He attended the University in the 1960s. 

  Requirements: JMC Advertising majors needing financial aid who have shown academic potential, leadership and extracurricular involvement.

• Teresa Mae Potts Memorial Scholarship

  This scholarship honors the memory of 1985 alumna Teresa Potts. She was active in campus media as a student. During her professional career, she worked for the Texas Film Commission and for several film studios in California. 

  Requirements: It is awarded to an Electronic Media student.
   

• Shrader Family Scholarship Endowment

  Jack Shrader Memorial Scholarship and the Bob and Sue Shrader Scholarship. 

  Requirements: For junior/senior JMC majors or minors with a demonstrated commitment to a career in broadcasting and/or broadcast journalism. Other considerations include GPA, internships, participation in campus media organizations, demonstrated creativity and integrity in the production of radio and/or television communication.
