Record 412 students attend SJMC Internship, Career Fair

A record 412 students attended the SJMC Internship and Career Fair Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the LBJ Ballroom, once again impressing employers from 38 companies and many others.Gene Butler, volunteer and intern coordinator for South by Southwest Conferences and Festivals, was overwhelmed by the number of quality students attending this year’s event.“We always make great contacts at Texas State,” he said, adding, “Many interns from here have ended up working with us full-time. There’s never a shortage of talent here.”SXSW only takes 50 interns and accepts more than 2,000 volunteers annually to put on what has become an international event.Chris Covo, former student government president, was attending his first fair as an employer. “This was really fantastic, and I left here with about 100 resumes,” said Covo, whose family is starting two magazines, “Edible Austin” and “Edible San Antonio.” He was looking for writers, ad sales representatives and others.Television stations KHOU11 in Houston, KSAT12 in San Antonio, KVUE Austin, Telemundo were among television stations who also returned home with resumes for reporting, production and ad sales positions. Entercomm, Clear Channel Radio and Texas State’s own KTSW also attracted long lines of interested candidates.Central Texas Medical Center, the Make-a-Wish Foundation and Schlitterbahn were among an impressive group of companies or nonprofits that attended and reported impressive recruits.Allison Birk of Career Services was pleased with a packed ballroom and announced that the Texas Association of Broadcasters would be returning as a catalyst for the School’s internship and career fair in the spring.Students who want to stay current on internship opportunities should “like” the TxState SJMC Internships, Careers Facebook page and visit the SJMC Internships website.
