SJMC Graduate Assistantships

Graduate Instructional Assistants

Be an SJMC Graduate Assistant

Graduate assistantships at SJMC provide valuable experience, financial support, and the chance to grow professionally in a dynamic academic environment.

About our Assistantships

Graduate assistantships with competitive stipends and out-of-state tuition waivers are available to qualified applicants. Most assistantships begin in the fall semester, with some available in the spring. Summer assistantships are generally not offered. No prior teaching experience is required; all graduate assistants must complete a teaching workshop before the fall semester starts.

To be considered, students must apply to the Graduate Assistant Coordinator at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The application process is separate from graduate program admission. All assistantships are contingent upon acceptance into a Texas State graduate program, with priority given to students enrolled in the SJMC graduate program.

Graduate assistants must work at least 20 hours per week to qualify for the out-of-state tuition waiver.

Eligibility for All Assistantships

Applicants must have unconditional admission status, be enrolled in a minimum of nine graduate credit hours, and maintain a 3.0 GPA. International students must hold the appropriate visas (e.g., F-1 or J-1) to participate in assistantships.

Assistantships are generally renewable for up to four long semesters, subject to favorable faculty reviews each semester. Assignments and reappointments are made by the Graduate Assistant Coordinator in consultation with the School Director.
