About Diana “DeeDee” Fuentes
DeeDee’s Impact as a Professor
Diana “DeeDee” Fuentes was a lecturer in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and an experienced journalist who brought decades of professional insight into the classroom. She helped students develop strong reporting skills, critical thinking, and a clear understanding of journalism’s role in serving the public. She was known for her mentorship and for preparing students to enter the field with confidence, integrity, and practical experience.
From the Newsroom to the Classroom
Professor Fuentes transitioned from the newsroom to the classroom after a long career in journalism. She worked at the San Antonio Express-News as deputy metro editor, where she contributed to newsroom leadership and coverage development.She later taught journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia and Texas State University, sharing real-world experience with students. She earned a master’s degree in mass communication from Texas State University in 2022.Her work reflected a commitment to strong reporting, ethical decision-making, and preparing future journalists.
Professional Involvement and Service
Professor Fuentes was actively involved in professional journalism organizations throughout her career. She contributed to efforts that support press freedom, public access to information, and professional development.Her involvement included work with the Society of Professional Journalists, the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.She also served as executive director of Investigative Reporters and Editors, where she supported journalists and strengthened investigative reporting nationwide.
Honors and Contributions
Professor Fuentes was recognized for her leadership, mentorship, and service to the journalism profession. In 2022, she was inducted into the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Hall of Fame, recognizing her contributions to the field.She was respected by colleagues and students for her dedication to journalism, her leadership within professional organizations, and her commitment to supporting others in the field.
About the Scholarship
This scholarship will provide funding for students attending Texas State University who are pursuing a degree in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
