The Texas State chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists has been named the 2024–2025 Region 8 Chapter of the Year. The honor recognizes excellence among SPJ college chapters in Texas and Oklahoma and advances the chapter to national consideration in 2026.
The award was announced by faculty advisor Jessica L. James, associate professor of instruction, following a regional review of the chapter’s annual report submitted in July. Professional SPJ chapters evaluated submissions based on leadership, programming, impact, and overall chapter performance.
“This recognition reflects the consistency and professionalism of our student leaders and members,” James said. “They have built a chapter that prioritizes growth, access, and real-world journalism experience.”
The honor marks the chapter’s first regional recognition since 2018, when SPJ Texas State received Program of the Year. The award carries additional significance for the School of Journalism and Mass Communication as it reflects continued momentum following the passing of longtime faculty member and mentor Kym Fox in July.
James noted that Fox’s influence continues to guide the chapter’s work and values, adding that she would have been proud of the chapter’s direction.
Judy Oskam, director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, congratulated the chapter and acknowledged the collective effort behind the achievement.
“This award speaks to the strength of our students and the faculty leadership that supports them,” Oskam said.
SPJ Texas State connects students with professional journalists, provides learning opportunities beyond the classroom, and promotes ethical journalism through programming, networking, and conference participation. The chapter meets monthly and is open to students interested in journalism and media careers.
