SJMC Graduate Assistantships
Be a Graduate Assistant with SJMC
Graduate assistantships with competitive stipends and waiver of out-of-state tuition are available to qualified applicants.
Most assistantships are assigned starting fall semester, but assistantships may be available in the spring. Assistantships are usually not awarded during summer terms. No prior experience in teaching is expected and all graduate assistants have to undergo a teaching workshop prior to the commencement of classes in fall.
To be appointed to a graduate assistantship, students must apply to the Graduate Assistant Coordinator, School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Contact information and an online application are provided below. This application is separate from the application for admission to the graduate program. All graduate assistantships are contingent upon acceptance into a Texas State graduate program. First priority is given to students accepted into the School of Journalism and Mass Communication graduate program.
Graduate assistants must be employed for at least 20 hours per week to be eligible for an out-of-state tuition waiver to pay the in-state tuition rate.
Eligibility for All Assistantships
To be eligible for assistantships, students must have unconditional admission status, should be enrolled in at least nine graduate credit hours and have a 3.0 GPA. All International students must be in possession of the appropriate lawful visas such as an F-1 or a J-1 in order to participate in graduate assistantships.
Assistantships are renewable generally for a total of four long semesters if students are favorably reviewed by their faculty supervisors at the end of each semester. All assignments and reappointments are made by the Graduate Assistant Coordinator in consultation with the School's Director.
