About MCWeek

Mass Comm Week (MCWeek) is an annual event hosted by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. It brings together alumni, media professionals, and industry experts to share their knowledge and experiences with our students. During this week, guest speakers participate in classes and special sessions, offering insights into current trends, career opportunities, and the future of media.

As faculty members hosting guest speakers, your preparation and engagement are key to ensuring a rewarding experience for both students and speakers. Please follow the steps below to make your session as impactful as possible.

Before MCWeek

  • Collect your guest speaker's information (name, title, organization, biography, headshot) as well as the presentation topic.
  • Fill out the Guest Speaker Intake form that was sent to your email. The form is linked here.
  • Inform your students about the guest and topic.
  • Prepare a few questions to initiate the Q&A session (if needed).
  • Confirm any changes to the date, time, and location with the speaker and MCWeek organizers at mcweek@txstate.edu.

During MCWeek

Green Room and Check-In Process

We have a dedicated green room available on the first floor conference room of Old Main for our guests.

* Guest speakers should check in at the green room upon arrival.

  • They can grab a snack and refreshments
  • They will get a name tag
  • This is where their parking will be validated

This is where you can also meet your guest speaker before the class. While speakers have the option to meet at a place of your choosing, we highly recommend using the green room for a smooth experience.

*If your class is in Alkek, Live Oak, or Hines, please be sure to arrange time before your session to meet your speaker in the green room. You can also opt to grab your speakers parking validation and swag earlier.

During your class session time

  • Arrive at least 10 minutes early to set up and test equipment. (If you encounter any technical difficulties, please contact our Technology Manager, ZAQ Collins):
  • Phone: (512) 408-4560
  • Email: zqc1@txstate.edu
  • Introduce the speaker enthusiastically to your class, highlighting their expertise and relevance.
  • Manage time to ensure the speaker has their full allotted time.
  • Facilitate student engagement and questions (if you are not the moderator.)
  • Thank the speaker publicly at the end of the session.

After MCWeek

  • Follow up with a thank-you note to the speaker
  • Incorporate insights from the talk into future class discussions
  • Provide feedback to the MCWeek team.
  • Share any photos or other content of your session with the MCWeek team mcweek@txstate.edu
  • Share any promised resources or connections with students or the speaker.
