Dr. Judy Oskam, director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University, was recently recognized with the Gene Barnwell Waugh Mentor Award by the Women Communicators of Austin (WCA) at their annual Banner Brunch. This prestigious award honors individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to mentorship and leadership in the field of communication.

Throughout her career, Dr. Oskam has made significant contributions as an educator, communicator, and mentor, inspiring countless students to pursue impactful careers in media and public relations. In addition to her role as director, she teaches undergraduate courses in public relations and media communications and leads a graduate course in creative problem solving.

Dr. Oskam’s visionary leadership has expanded the reach of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, creating transformative learning opportunities through education abroad and Study-in-America programs. These initiatives have brought students to cities and countries around the world, including the UK, Spain, Japan, Scotland, New York, Washington, and California, with plans to extend the program to Querétaro, Mexico.

This award celebrates Dr. Oskam’s unwavering commitment to empowering the next generation of media professionals and her ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world experience.
